JFS welcomes applications for the School Direct Programme (Training Route). In partnership with our Higher Education partner, the Institute of Education (IOE), we are now recruiting for placements commencing in September 2015.
Minimum degree required: Upper Second.
- have achieved grade C or above at GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics;
- have a degree classification of at least 2:1 in the subject (or related subject) in which you wish to train;
- have passed the literacy and numeracy professional skills tests prior to starting teacher training;
- be able to read effectively and communicate clearly and accurately in standard English, both verbally and in writing;
- be able to demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively with adults and children alike and also be able to show a sound understanding of the subject or age phase that you wish to teach;
- take part in an interview process designed to assess your suitability to teach;
- have the capability to meet the required Teaching Standards by the end of training and possess appropriate and intellectual qualities to be a teacher.
Any offer of a place on our programme will be conditional upon:
- two satisfactory references;
- original qualification documents, including your degree certificate and higher and/or further education certificates;
- a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

What we are looking for
First and foremost, we are looking for mature, committed people who are passionate about their subject area and wish to enthuse our students through seeking to inspire them with a love of learning and enjoyment of the learning process.
It is vital that all our teachers are committed to the progress and achievement of students from all backgrounds and abilities. They should have an unswerving commitment to ensuring that our students achieve not only academic success but also the highest standards of courtesy and care for others.
It is also important that successful candidates are committed to their own continuous learning and professional development within the supportive framework of JFS, a school with a rich history and tradition within the Jewish community. We are looking for trainee teachers who are resilient, hardworking and collaborative; teachers who will, by drawing from their previous life experience, enrich the educational experience and personal development of our students.
Please note that the JFS staff profile shows well over half of our teaching staff are non-Jewish. Applications from faith or non-faith backgrounds are most welcome. JFS will be holding an Open Day for interested applicants. You will be given a tour of the School and opportunities to see teachers in action in the classroom and student learning, as well as to meet relevant colleagues with whom you would be working, if accepted onto the programme.
How we select our trainees
The School Direct selection process is rigorous but also aims to provide you with a real experience of the energy which characterises a typical day for staff and students at JFS. The process will include:
- a classroom observation experience;
- a short presentation which we will ask you to prepare;
- a panel interview with the relevant Subject Leader and a member of the Senor Leadership Team.
About this training programme
This programme runs for one year and is available to high-quality graduates. Successful completion will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The selection process will start with a standard application form, provided by the Department for Education (DfE) through the UCAS website. You will need to demonstrate that you meet the academic requirements laid down by the Teaching Agency. We would also expect to see some evidence of why you have decided to pursue a career in teaching, for example, experience of observing in a school or employment within a school setting, e.g. as a Teaching Assistant. At JFS, you will be supported by a Professional Co-Ordinating Mentor and a Subject Mentor, both of whom will look after your professional development. You will be expected to take an active role in your chosen department and be fully involved in pastoral, curricular and extra-curricular activities. You will build up to a teaching timetable of 9-11 hours per week and will have the opportunity to observe many other outstanding teachers in the School, as you develop your practice. Professional Studies sessions – delivered by a number of experts from within the School - will enable you to develop an understanding of broader whole-school issues (e.g. behaviour management, differentiation, assessment etc.) and will give you the opportunity to meet other trainees. Historically, we have had up to ten Student Teachers in each placement from a range of disciplines and providers.
Many past PGCE trainees have been employed at JFS – although numbers are naturally dependent on whether vacancies arise in what is, usually, a stable teaching staff.
We have a number of partners for the second placement which will last for a minimum of six weeks in the Spring/Summer terms. These include a number of local schools, with whom we work closely, to provide a contrasting yet rewarding placement.
The English Department at JFS
The English Department is very well resourced. It has a suite of ten dedicated classrooms, one Independent Learning Areas (equipped with computers), a large Staff Resource Base, an office for the Head of English and ample storage space. State-of the-art, superb ICT facilities pervade the School as a whole and all classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. The School also has a dedicated Theatre (seating 450 people), a Drama Studio and a Television/Media Studio.
The enthusiasm and hard work of colleagues enables the Department to achieve consistently very good results at Key Stage 3, GCSE and ‘A’ Level. It is justifiably proud of its achievements with students of all abilities.
Extra-curricular events are an integral part of the Department’s work, including visits to the theatre, visiting theatre groups, reading events and museum visits. Authors and other specialists are invited to work with specific groups of students.
The English Department was named as a core subject for Humanities status under the Specialist Schools Initiative. Some of our Specialist School funding has been used to create programmes which will develop further the skills of our most able students, e.g. Writers’ workshops, school magazine and reading circles, to enrich the curriculum and to extend extra-curricular provision for all students. The English Department is pivotal to a range of whole-school teaching and learning objectives.
The Department currently has 17 members. There is a strong team spirit within the Department and most staff teach across all Key Stages and all abilities. All members of the Department are encouraged to contribute to the development of policies and schemes of work.
The School operates a two-week timetable, with 48 lessons in the fortnightly cycle. Each lesson is 60 or 65 minutes long.
At Key Stage 3, six lessons per cycle are offered for English; at Key Stage 4, this is increased to seven lessons. Year 7 is taught in Tutor Groups, with groups of very able students taking part in the accelerated Key Stage 3 Curriculum; Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 are placed in ability sets. All students currently sit AQA GCSE English Language and English Literature. GCSE results in 2012/13 showed 89% achieving A*-C grades.
English ‘is a very popular choice at ‘A’ Level, with four classes in both Years 12 and 13. Students are entered for the OCR Specification ‘A’ Level in English Literature. ‘A’ Level English Language is also offered. All courses achieve very successful results. Members of the department also lead in the teaching of Drama/Theatre Studies and Media Studies. ‘A2’ results in 2012/13 showed 74% of students achieving A*-B grades.
A good number of students proceed to read English at a range of universities including Oxford and Cambridge.

Most recently, JFS was awarded Investors in People Gold status.
In June 2012, the School achieved the NACE Challenge award. NACE (the National Association for Able Children in Education) is a well-established and prestigious independent organisation. In order to achieve the Challenge Award, a school has to demonstrate pedagogic and organisational excellence in the way it addresses the needs of its very able children. JFS is only one of 68 secondary schools in England and Wales to have achieved this award. The report declaring that: “The philosophy, culture and ethos of JFS are extremely aspirational and all encompassing, resulting in a wealth of achievement.” This is the aim we have in catering for the needs of all our students.
In July 2013, JFS was awarded full Investor in Careers status, following a detailed assessment of our provision for, and success in, providing high quality careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) to our students. JFS is a national leader in the field of post-16 guidance and has also published a successful guide to University Interviews.

The nearest tube station to JFS is Kingsbury, on the Jubilee line, which is a seven-minute walk from the School. Preston Road tube station, on the Metropolitan line, is a 20-minute walk from the School or, alternatively, the 79 bus stops here and right outside the School.
