School Direct (Training Route)
JFS welcomes applications for the School Direct Programme (Training Route).
In partnership with the Woodfield Teaching School Alliance and our Higher Education partner, the Institute of Education, we are now recruiting for placements commencing in September 2016 in English, Geography, Mathematics and other subjects by request (subject to National College approval).

What is School Direct?
School Direct is a new teacher training model where schools select and recruit applicants. There is an expectation, though not a guarantee, that successful completion of the one-year programme will lead to employment in the training school. Training bursaries may be available, depending on which subject you intend to teach. For further information on School Direct, including eligibility criteria and funding arrangements, please visit the Department for Education website. Please click here.
The JFS School Direct Programme
JFS is a high-performing, comprehensive school with outstanding examination results over many years. Our modern campus is on a 26-acre greenfield site. We have superb facilities and all classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. Successful School Direct applicants will benefit from:
- a superb in-school training programme, tailored to your needs, supported by experienced subject mentors who are outstanding classroom practitioners;
- opportunities to observe and learn from a wide range of outstanding colleagues across the school and to participate fully in the vibrant daily life of the School;
- a professional training and development programme in-house, linked to the proven expertise offered by our partners at the Institute of Education;
- a school where teaching and learning takes place in a calm and caring environment, where the strong ethos of ambition and success enables all teachers to develop their skills;
- additional experience at a second outstanding secondary school in the borough of Brent.
Institute of Education (IOE)
All student teachers will be prepared, in line with the requirements of the standards, for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and, where applicable, the statutory requirements.
Students benefit enormously from the complementary skills and expertise of staff at the IOE and at the partnership schools, with their teachers serving as tutors, mentors and joint assessors for the student teachers.
You will carry out blocks of practical teaching in all three terms. In order for you to acquire a variety of experience, you will have two different placements. Practical training focuses on:
- effective classroom management, including planning and preparing lessons;
- teaching with support from experienced teachers;
- the use of ICT;
- assessing students’ work and evaluating your own teaching;
- the general duties of a teacher in school;
- the professional values that underpin teaching.
There will be an induction period in each school so that you can see how the school functions, observe experienced teachers and teach as part of a team, before you start to take your own classes. Throughout your teaching practice you will be supported by a school subject tutor.
University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) Teacher Training
This is the new way to apply for postgraduate teacher training in the UK, replacing the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR).
UCAS Teacher Training is an admissions service for graduates interested in teacher training. It covers training programmes at UK school-centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) institutions, and School Direct providers. All initial teacher training places for School Direct are advertised through a single application system, operated by UCAS. Please click here.
